I develop most of my lesson plans using GLAD principles. I like to use multiple senses, student interaction and various resources to keep the student active. When teaching a language, it is important to know the basic grammar structure first, and then speaking and listening follow. I work with people with disabilities, teaching them how to canoe with a company called Wilderness Inquiry. The company's motto is: Anyone, anywhere, anytime, any place. We strive to make this possible, because it is possible! It is possible to have a quadriplegic go on a canoe trip or a blind person to kayak through caves. I have learned that anything is possible with adaptation. While teaching, a successful teacher can allow everyone to learn, with adaptation.
During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students fr ... read more

When considering my teaching style, it is difficult to explain a single process for teaching. When working with different people it is important to remain creative, inventive, and patient. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing. Too many children are willing to give up on a subject, all they need is someone who knows they can do it, and can show them how.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed teaching. I love it when students have that moment when they finally get what you have been teaching them. I have taught a wide range of students, from Kindergarten thru 60 year-olds returning to college. I believe that the hands-on approach works best for most students, learning by applying their knowledge. I feel I have made a difference in the lives of students. I am patient and will continue going over information until the student has grasped it.

Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.
I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles.

Establishing a friendship with a student can make the learning process go much better. Defining strengths and weakness can allow for appropriately allocation of time to promote more efficient studying. Kinetic learning would be used to provide a visual demonstration of the material for better understanding.

I have a very modifiable style of teaching, meaning I cater to the student or students. I quickly learn the curriculum and can find multiple ways to teach it. This allows me to utilize the students major styles of learning and develop the areas where they may struggle. Teaching this way helps mold a complete student who is able to understand themselves and can learn from any lesson.
While attending and completing four years of Education courses at a well respected institution I was focused and driven to complete the curriculum and focus on creative lesson planning. Maintaining a GPA of 3.6 in Education courses while participating in four years of collegiate sports really polished my ability to multi-task. I earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science from Viterbo University. I started tutoring when my religion teacher observed that I was excelling and asked if I would tutor a fellow student. After that I began tutoring remedial math and college algebra. The Math Specialist, who was the coordinator for the Math 001 course, and myself were able to create a structured and effective tutoring method for her remedial math students. I also tutored a semester of Biology 100. I enjoy tutoring because I love seeing a student finally understand the subject matter. I have had the opportunity to work with several personalities and understand how to handle several different social situations.
As far as teaching style, I think it is important to listen to what the student really needs and adapt your teaching style based on their needs. I've learned with math espe ... read more

I believe that with the right tools, any child can learn and improve their understanding. I know no two students learn in quite the same way, and I am able to adjust my teaching methods to fit a child's needs.

I understand that each student is an individual, and I like to get to know him/her as a person. The more I am able to connect with the student, the more successful we will be in achieving academic success! My teaching style is adaptable to the student. Some students need help focusing, extra practice, a boost in confidence or the subject explained in a different way for comprehension. The beauty of tutoring is you are able tailor the material and style to the individual learning ability of the student, unlike in the classroom where you must serve the entire group.

I enjoy teaching mathematics and biology. If the student is willing to learn in some fashion I can help him or her. I tend to teach by examples for mathematics and for biology I teach in a lecture style, answering questions in-depth when necessary. In both fields I can give in-depth explanations for concepts. Specifically in mathematics, deriving proofs is especially easy for me and could be useful for those students that wish to see the "why" of certain equations.

Science is a topic that I have always been interested in. I earned a bachelor degree in chemistry, which has enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of math and science. I went back and obtained my education license to teach science, where my real passion lies. I have taught many high school sciences for the past couple of years.
My goal is to connect the information to the real world. I want students to understand why it is important to know today’s topic.
