While in undergrad I volunteered with a program at my school where underprivileged children would come in and have a mentor. As a mentor we would help them with homework, take them out for a trip, or just have someone to talk and ask questions to.
I absolutely believe that each person learns differently. Some children learn better by sight, others by sound. A good educator is one who is able to provide both types of learning to the child and thereafter pickup on what allows the child to learn the best.

I like to teach using everyday life experiences and things that are relative to the tutee. One can read MacBeth and other writers from the past and still be motivated to learn. I don't believe in memorization because that is not learning. I want the child to carry his newly learned knowledge well into his future and always have it available in the back of his mind.
