While substituting right before FCAT, I was very excited. I was actually going to be able to teach writing and the elements of writing to the students. My objective was to evaluate where the students were and where they needed to be in 5 weeks for the FCAT writing. I used many techniques that the students loved; assigning a writing prompt, having the students write their responses, then getting in groups of two, the students traded their papers and their peers read and evaluated them. I like to teach using everyday life experiences and things that are relative to the tutee. One can read MacBeth and other writers from the past and still be motivated to learn. I don't believe in memorization because that is not learning. I want the child to carry his newly learned knowledge well into his future and always have it available in the back of his mind.
