A Little Bit About Me...

I am a firm believer that everyone learns in different ways. This being the case, I like to identify a person's strengths and weaknesses so that I can create an individual plan that is tailored to the specific person. I build upon strengths while addressing weaknesses so that in the end, the student becomes a well-rounded and more effective learner. I believe in challenging students and providing them with the tools to succeed. Most importantly, I am patient and encouraging when working with an individual. I always try to be very patient and supportive when I'm tutoring. I am a strong believer in the Socratic method of teaching, which from my understanding, means asking the student questions regarding what they already know about a concept in order to customize the lesson and/or "lead" them to the answer. I also try to use analogies and real life examples that are tailored according to the interests of my student. For example, if my student is interested in sports, then I try to use sports analogies and examples to describe difficult concepts. If my student is interested in science, then I use science analogies and examples, etc. I also try to break down complex concepts into smaller "pieces" so that I can help my student analyze and understand the concept one piece at a time. I have been an elementary school teacher for nearly 18 years. I taught for 7 years in Elk Creek and 10 years in Los Molinos where I currently teach 2nd and 3rd grade. I earned Glenn County Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Tehama County Teacher of the Year in 2007. I was also named Glenn County Teacher of the Week for Channel 7 News in 1999. From 1992 to 1996 I trained in study skills for the History and Geology departments at Chico State through the Equity Services Office. This included a 3 hour training session each week in addition to tutoring individually and in groups for struggling college students. This was 4 of the greatest years ever! This University training really helped prepare me for the world of teaching and tutoring.
