I believe the first step is to always ascertain where a student is in their comprehension of the subject and what their propensity is to learn (i.e. quick learner, learns by examples etc.). That gives me an idea of how fast/slow to go and how best to get to cement actual learning.
Generally, I like to get the student to arrive at answers by asking pointed questions so that their minds can understand the process versus simply memorizing the answers. I also believe in providing both positive feedback as well as constructive criticism where needed. I have always been fascinated by numbers and how the analysis of numbers can be used in nearly everything we do.
