A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring for the past five years. I have tutored a large variety of students including high school, middle school, and elementary school students. The way how I run my classes are first we do a warm up on the subject that I will be teaching and then I will teach the student a lesson. After teaching the student I will give them practice and let them answer any questions. And then towards the end of the class, I will give them a mini quiz where to understand the strength and weaknesses.

This fall, I begin my twentieth year as a teacher. I'm still teaching because I'm still curious myself about the world around us, and sharing that passion, curiosity, and drive to know is part of my classroom every day. Showing learners the path to success is not just my vocation--it's an avocation. I've taught at high schools in Texas and Virginia, and have worked with students of all abilities: remediation and review classes, general, academic, honors, advanced placement, and advanced placement for gifted students. The courses I've taught include ESL English language, and reading, science, social studies, and math for ESL; Earth Science; Sat Verbal and SAT Writing; high school English for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades; AP Language and Composition; AP Literature and Composition; Creative Writing; Practical Writing; and, Science Fiction. I believe in holistic education, one that connects the student to the world around him, using sight, touch, and sound. Research shows that multiple forms of input create greater pathways for learning and retention. I prefer to use realia, or "real life" tools to reinforce the learning process and make connections. I believe it is important for learners to see the relevance or purpose in learning, otherwise, fatigue, boredom and frustration set in. I am energetic, flexible and committed to analyzing and meeting the needs of my students in non-traditional ways.

Education has always been my field of interest. When my children were young (8 and 4), I've been teaching in order to match my schedule with their school hours and vacations. With French as my mother's tongue and because I studied in French, I was very excited about the opportunity to serve the Foreign Langage Program initiated by the PTA at Montgomery County Public Schools in MD. I've been teaching within this program until I moved in Western Maryland recently. In parallel, I was a substitute teacher with the county. I passed the PRAXIS tests(I, II, III). I taught also with BELL program in after school program to help students in DC public schools. I worked as well as accounting and went to college to get additional credits for the CPA exam. I will be glad to be a help for students that need additional time outside regular school hours to succeed. I understand very well this ne ... read more

Through personal and professional experience, I have come to believe that fluency is most quickly achieved through immersion in a language (and instruction in only that language). However, accuracy can be developed and maintained more consistently when a student is able to compare his or her native tongue to the one which he or she is studying - as long as the student has a good understanding of the grammar and other basics of the native language. As a result, I believe in that constant exposure to a language, coupled with conceptual comparison to the native tongue, will foster the best combination of fluency and accuracy. I also believe that appreciation of the cultural and historical elements of a foreign language will encourage students in their studies and help them maintain enthusiasm when they meet a challenge.

After evaluating over 7,200 college English papers, I know the language skills that students need to develop in high school. I have taught college composition courses full-time for five years and part-time for nine, helping a wide variety of students become better readers and writers. During both my M.A. and Ph.D. programs in English, I was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship allowing me to study Composition & Rhetoric pedagogy while teaching one or two freshman-level classes of my own. I have conducted hundreds of individual writing conferences, and I have experience with gifted students, ESL students, remedial students, and students with learning difficulties. I enjoy helping people become more effective, confident writers.
Although some students are naturally gifted in reading and writing, I believe every student can learn strategies to strengthen their language abilit ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate of Savannah College of Arts and Design, I have extensive experience with writing skills, leading and directing project based assignments and writing research papers, essays and critiques in my field. The varied classload I carried during my 4 years has more than prepared me for a tutoring position as I feel that all of my experiences with writing, psychology, various design and film communication art classes give me the skillset required to help students achieve their educational goals.
I am a demonstrative teacher and leader. I believe in the theory of "model, action, and talk" style of presentation of concepts. My creative background lends itself well to keeping a student's initiative and inspiration to a high level so that they are actually motivated to perform at their best. I love working with children, their minds are like sponges, with the ability to accept information/knowledge as long as it is presented in the best possible way. As a child, I had difficulty in learning in school, not because I was disinterested in school but instead I received information differently then others. I had to work my mind and change my study habits to suit what worked for me. I believe children are able to gain any information as long as it is formatted to them, I believe I can assist with that endeavor.
I set high expectations on my personal achievements in education and volunteering. Currently I am a graduate student in the MBA program to become a certified public accountant. I have earned an AS and BA in Business Administration and graduate cum laude in the concentration. In training, I have worked as a Microsoft Office Trainer for the United States Coast Guard and ... read more

My teaching style is modified for each student and their specific needs. When I was a volunteer ESL tutor, lessons were more structured and so I had to follow a fairly specific lesson plan. I would give a brief class lesson (of grammar/conversation) and give many examples on the blackboard. I would try to involve all students by encouraging questions and also asking them questions. I would go around and make sure they could properly complete exercises and I would challenge them with an application of the lesson. For my organic chemistry student, the tutoring was more problem-based. She would ask for help on specific questions/materials she would have issues with. I would go back and explain/draw the problem step by step and then ask her to repeat it. Finally, I would give her extra problems to be sure she could apply the information in a more difficult context.
