I taught high school English and coached football for forty years before I retired. The two positions are compatible in that each has talented youngsters who come to school each day excited to learn and improve and those others less capable and seemingly apathetic about the task at hand. I went to North Georgia College & State University, were I earned a BA in English, and an MA in Public Administration. I am first and foremost a listener. I'm laid back and patient but understand that success on exams and in school does not come to most without hard work and challenging yourself to go out on a limb. I believe that the best way to learn is to make materials apply to you and things going on around you.
From early on in my high school career I understood that passing AP tests could mean graduating from college in 3 years, saving money for grad school, and a chance to get into the professional world sooner. That's exactly what I did. I had to take some summer school and intersession classes, but I endured. All the while I was involved with an organization on campus that worked to educate the student body on a number of environmental issues, worked with volunteers on events and campaigns, and trained my peers to take the same leadership that I did.
