A Little Bit About Me...

I have found through my most recent teaching and tutoring opportunities that all children have the capability to learn. Some just need that one-on-one assistance in order to succeed. I believe in hands-on learning that provides students of all learning styles with the opportunity to excel. I also believe in discussion as another means of learning through the method of Socratic questioning for all levels of English learning. I am eager to provide the means for each of my students to be able to not only learn to read and write effectively, but to also be able to use critical thinking in all subjects and levels of learning.

As a person who holds both a BA and MA in English, each with concentrations in writing (creative and technical, respectively), I am qualified to, and have for several years, tutored English language studies skills, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehesion, to students from the third grade through college. I have also taught English composition at the college level. Additionally, I have tutored students from primary to secondary school in other liberal arts subjects where English language and study skills are applicable, such as social studies and history. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been involved in Deaf Education since 1998 when I graduated from Gallaudet University. Since that time, I have taught both secondary and post-secondary English classes, focusing on my students' learning and controlling their reading and writing skills. I have created materials that break down English, which at times is confusing for people who use it natively, into more easily understood bits. I also tutor reading and grammar for students who need more support.
I believe there are three steps in learning: instruction, practice and review. In the instruction phase, the teacher takes the reins in the class and explains the concept in full. In the practice phase, students try to apply the concept on their own with teacher support.
