I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. Repetition is very helpful and note cards are good for memorization. Taking notes is a good way for the student to stay focused. A little comedy helps too to help students to remember. I enjoy helping students, adult or younger, feel the success of learning. Sometimes it is a struggle, but it is always fulfilling to see the relief and happiness they feel when they do succeed.
My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. I believe there are three steps in learning: instruction, practice and review. In the instruction phase, the teacher takes the reins in the class and explains the concept in full. In the practice phase, students try to apply the concept on their own with teacher support. In the final stage, when the concept comes up again, the teacher relies on the students to apply the concept independently. Of course, if the students cannot apply the concept independently, it may be necessary to re-visit step one. As a teacher and tutor, I stress these steps, and make sure the students are encouraged and praised the entire time.
