My teaching style depends on the student and subject I'm dealing with. For the non-reading adults I started by teaching them letter recognition and basic sounds; moved on to simple words; then sentances. During my college class I would review the evening's lesson and goals, then have the students perform the exercise in the textbooks. During the practical exercise I made myself available to all the students and gave one-on-one instruction to those that needed it.
I taught all subjects for adult learners preparing for the GED tests through Region IX Education Services Center's Adult Education program for 4 years in the evenings. Personally, I find that an individual’s feeling and attitude about subjects such as mathematics and physics can greatly impact a student's success than any other factor.I aspire to help students see how fun (and actually quite addictive) math and mathematical sciences really are. If it can become fun, it is no longer “work”. I use many analogies. Obtaining a strong conceptual understanding about a topic makes the "problem" part easier to understand and retain.
