In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. I also have a master’s degree in Divergent Learning, which is geared towards at-risk and adult learners. My teaching style is very hands on. I try to make skills applicable to student's lives, which helps them internalize the information. I am also very organized--I expect my students to maintain a help notebook to assist with the various steps to problems. I like to push my students to excel and really understand the math, not just "do" the math.
