Reading and Spelling Tutor: Specializing in Dyslexia/LD/ADHD

I teach using the Barton Reading and Spelling System (an Orton-Gillingham based program). This program teaches students to read and spell phonetically (sounding out words). I use a multi-sensory method (see a word, touch a word, say a word, hear a word), so that the student is completely engaged in the lesson through the use of most of their senses. This program was designed for students with dyslexia and learning disabilities, but would help anyone (child or adult) that struggles with reading and spelling, especially individuals with ADD/ADHD. I have seen quite a great deal of growth in the students I am currently working with and I absolutely love teaching with the Barton System!
I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been certified to use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I have 3 years of experience in teaching grades K and 1 and 1 year of experience in teaching ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Magna Cum Laude graduate from a well-rounded liberal arts college, I feel that I have been given the credentials to assist students with needs in almost any subject. I completed college level course work in not only my areas of study, but also in each of the scholastic disciplines in order to provide myself with the ability to expand my knowledge in all subjects. I was a Dean’s List student throughout college and was a member of several different honor societies. I have tutored students in mathematical and humanities subjects, as well as one semester spent tutoring an ESL student.

More About This Tutor...

As a tutor my initial focus is identifying the students strengths and applying them when addressing areas where the student has a deficit. It is important to motivate the student in order to give confidence in their ability to face academic challenges. The key is to establish or enhance the foundation of student learning by developing a positive relationship with developing dependency. It is also important that the student develops transferrable skills regarding problem solving when addressing current assignments so that despite the situation, he/she possesses the meta-cognitive skills to adapt and succeed.
My experience began as a tutor in college and upon graduating I taught eighth grade science, high school sciences (biology, physical and earth), community college level biology (I and II) and biotechnology. I have a MS in Biology (research/thesis and study focus in biochemis ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My teaching style is adapted to meet the student’s needs. I firmly believe that each child learns differently. I think students either learn kinesthetically, visually, or auditorally, for the most part. I think it is my job as a teacher to find out which style best suits the student and adapt my style accordingly. I also think that while I am trying to help students develop skills in their weak areas, I need to be focusing on their strengths and building their self-esteem. I think tutoring gives great opportunity for me to achieve this goal.
For my first experience in teaching, I worked with both high school and elementary school students who were learning disabled and in need of help. I used the Orton-Gillingham method for dyslexia and found that it really seemed to work well to suit the student’s needs. From there I went on to work two years in resource rooms working with middle ... read more

I love teaching adolescents. I think it is very fulfilling to watch a child obtain knowledge. I have a very hands-on teaching style. I like to work through all the problems and questions that the children have. I pride myself on using unique examples to explain complex problems and concepts.
In my last year of college I chose to complete my field placement research project at an accelerated junior high school for low income families. At this school I was in charge of the after-school science club. I helped the adolescents learn aspects of science they wouldn't learn in the classroom. We also competed at a state Science Olympic competition. I was also in charge of after-school homework centers as well as a science and math tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked for nearly 10 years with a loyal student base many of whom I taught the entire time. I taught kids from when they were in elementary school all the way until high school. Some students were ineligible to go to normal school so I was their only teacher for years. In that time I managed to get these students up to 4 years ahead in certain subjects like math and science. I've also taught students that could not even speak english when they came to me and in a short amount of time they were fluent.
Teaching to me is about relating the information to the students in a way they can understand. It is very important to make the material relevant to their live ... read more

I assume even the 'worst' student wishes to learn, has the means to do so, and will direct me in how to help him or her discover a best method. Learning must be both fun and hard work, until the hard work becomes 'fun'. I have expertise in using the internet well beyond Wikipedia and Answers.com. I have access through the university to a variety of sources not available outside the universty (Elsiver, JStor, ArtStor, etc.) I believe in all sources for encouraging readers: comics, sports bios, the sports page of the NYTimes, magazines from InStyle to the NewYorker. I like 'manipulatives' in math because it makes math visual. Drawing the Pythagorean Theorem is a thrill to even my engineering majors.
For over twenty years I have taught at the college level, with extensive expertise in teaching the liberal arts to engineering majors. Much of my work is directed towards teaching ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that creating a warm learning environment and a good relationship with a student is the first step to successful learning. When a student trusts and respects their teacher, they feel safe to make mistakes, which is a wonderful way to learn. I believe that each child has his or her own learning style and way of making connections in order to create a deep understanding. I work hard to foster each of my students learning by keying into their personal way of retaining and comprehending information. I realize that learning something new can be frustrating if it isn’t coming easy. Children need to have an understanding supporter that will help them see their small achievements in order to build their confidence and achieve great heights.
After graduating from Purdue University I wanted to challenge what I had learned and how I would apply that in my own classroom. I was ... read more
