I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it." A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. I find that many of the problems that students have with mathematics are not a result of an inability to understand the subject, but an inability to grasp the material as presented by the teacher, and a resulting disinterest. I like to spend the first couple of meetings with the student assessing how they learn best and giving them some tricks that lead to success in an area that has given them a lot of trouble. Through their success, we can build interest in the subject, and through understanding their learning patterns, we can present the material in a way that makes sense to them. I am currently a program director at a CampFire summer camp and love working with kids of all ages. After finishing classes at Humboldt State in the winter of 2005, I worked for the Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) for a year and a half. The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system.
