College Student - Eager to Gain Experience!

I am a hands on teacher, probably because I am a hands on learner. I find it difficult to learn when an instructor is solely lecturing. I believe that constant practice and hands on lessons are the most effective ways of learning.
I have an incredible passion for teaching. I am currently in the process of getting my Bachelors in Secondary Education with a focus in English. I have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language and thoroughly enjoy teaching others composition, spelling, creative writing, reading, vocabulary, etc. I do not have much experience yet in a classroom setting but have volunteered at a middle school while getting my Associates degree. I helped a teacher at a middle school to teach students that were having difficulty in various subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach is to assess the needs of the individual. What are the learning goals? To pass a class, excel at certain content, or improve grades? This is important to understand so that we are both moving toward an identical objective and can travel together to that end. I am able to design a learning strategy for all content but particularly am knowledgeable in all social sciences and comprehension areas.
I am an educator by training, experience, and passionate interest. My Ph.D. in Instructional Technology has enabled me to assist all students with their learning challenges by devising specific and customized strategies that help each individual master content. I have been in adult learning positions in both corporate and higher education environments and would like to teach people of all ages how to learn what they need to know. A Little Bit About Me...

As a former paraprofessional with a Master's Degree in Social Work I have worked with kids in the past behaviorally and academically. I have a solid grasp of English, Grammar, Social Studies, and Mathematics.
I enjoy working with children of all ages. I feel my career in social work has allowed me to become more centered on compassion as a means of education, and engaging the child in the learning process while being compassionate. Children typically learn best when in a positive, comfortable situation. I would like them to feel comfortable enough to feel like they can be their best around me.

A Little Bit About Me...

Eight years ago my nephew became part of the Arizona juvenile system. Having dealt with all that entails, I made the decision to make a difference in childrens lives. It is my belief that children need positive role models in their life beyond the mother and father. I was lucky to have such role models in my life and would like the opportunity to be one myself. I have laid back attitude, have raised two sons that have become two wonderful, respectful teenagers with a bright future in front of them. My attitude and experience, both work and rel life, has prepared me to be a great leader.
After many years in the customer service industry; I returned back to school to acquire my Bachelors Degree in Human Services/Management. A Little Bit About Me...

In high school I was able to tutor students in all subjects ranging from English to Math to Musical Studies. Furthering my education at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX really opened my eyes and mind to wider ranges of educational foundations. As a double major in Communication and Classical Studies, I was able to get a well rounded education in all subjects. I feel that I am also skilled in math and got a minor in Art History. I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on.
I have always enjoyed tutoring students and seeing them "get" the subjects we are touching on. The look on their face during this moment is priceless. A Little Bit About Me...

First, and foremost, I believe that effective learning is both fun and relevant. I have always been able to make a game of it and to make it both interesting and challenging to others. My goal is never to teach them a rote solution, but to challenge them to think about the concepts and have then tell me the answers. This builds their confidence and solidifies their learning experience. I find that if they understand how a concept was derived in the first place, they seldom forget that story and therefore have learned something that will stay with them for a live time. I prefer to use the Socratic Method and draw the information from my students. Again, I think it is best if they THINK rather than learn. Over time I see all my students (and all our five daughters) have responded well to this approach.

More About This Tutor...

I certainly strive for having my students to understand the concept of the subject, rather than memorizing every step of a given process. Understanding the basics will give you the tools to solve or analyze a problem for a possible solution and that will lead you to more successful results.
I had the opportunity of tutoring college algebra and basics of statistics during 2003 and 2004 while pursuing my Master of Business Administration degree at Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. Also had the opportunity of being teacher assistant for geometry during my Junior year while taking my bachelor degree. Currently I manage a retail store for a Fortune 100 company and I just finished a concentration on Finances to add to my MBA degree.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that there is nothing so rewarding as that moment when a subject 'clicks' for a student. By staying positive and adaptive I believe it is possible to guide students to finding solutions on their own. I work at finding new ways to approach common stumbling blocks and try to show students how applicable math is to everyday life. If it had not been for a few extraordinary teachers, I may not have felt it possible to accomplish what I have. Teachers should be positive and inpirational and I always strive to attain that goal.
I received my B.S. in physics and went on to work at a Community College tutoring math. I enjoyed this work immensely and received excellent reviews from the students. While working at the college I also tutored middle school and high school students privately. Teaching students is a passion and an art. I approach each situation by trying to understand what stress factors are experienced by the students, as well as how they need to be approached to learn. Some students need to have a direct approach, others need to try on their own and then step by step correct their mistakes to both build up confidence for doing well and understand where they went wrong. I strive to make sure the student understands the process and not just memorizes the answers.
For my BA I decided in my Senior Year that I wanted to get a Masters Degree in Education so I switched my major last minute from Elementary Education with Emphasis in sciences and General Education to a understanding of how people learn. I have tutored friends and family in understanding a variety of subjects. Student success is a top priority of my mission and I will be receiving my Masters of ... read more
