Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"

My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. I have a passion for learning and love when I can help others learn complex material and pass classes. I have aced College Math up through Differential Equations and Calculus 3 algebra, trigonometry and geometry are foundations of the higher mathematics and therefore I understand them extremely well. I know the basics of both electrical and mechanical engineering mathematics. For example, transient circuit analysis for electrical engineering and shear and moment diagrams for mechanical engineering. All types of sciences have always come naturally to me such as chemistry, biology, and physics and I have always done very well in science classes
I like students to understand how the material they are learn ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As most people know, there are a variety of learning styles, and each student is a unique person with his or her own way of learning and being motivated to succeed. As a teacher, I always strive to know each student as an individual and discover how best to teach that student. I have had a wide variety of teaching experiences in many different subjects and settings and with students from Pre-K to 12th grade. I am flexible enough to adjust my teaching style to meet the unique needs and abilities of the students with whom I am working. Most of my students would say that I have a terrific ability to take a difficult concept and teach it in a way that makes sense to them.
I graduated summa cum laude from the State University of NY College at Cortland with a BA in Secondary English Education in 1989. Following that, I held a variety of positions in education including teaching in pre-s ... read more

My background includes 25 years in upholstery manufacturing and also honorable military experience. I have worked for many years to complete my degrees, and they are very valuable to me. My skills include computer proficiency, grammar, math, and communication. I pride myself in having a well prepared plan for any project I am involved with. I have led major projects for my church such as the Call Committee to hire our new pastor and the Family Fun Day for our community outreach. I relate to young people very well and feel confident I can help with their studies.
My approach is to establish a relationship with small talk and introductions. A parent must be present at all times. I will keep up with the child's work load in the respective subject and also be in contact with their teacher. But my inital style will be repetition, which I found to be most productive during my time in the ... read more

I have six children of my own and know that every child learns differently, even when they come from the same family. I believe the majority of children can master the material they are presented in school, but it is a matter of time. Many children take a little more time to understand the concepts and master the skills needed to move o ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of Hamilton College, one of the top liberal arts institutions in the United States. I have a bachelor degree in history with a focus on American colonial and British imperial history which has honed both my critical reading and writing skills. In addition, I am 18 credits shy of completing graduate degrees in both business administration and sports administration. In the past I have worked with children as both a sports coach, and as an instructor for various "summer camps."
I really enjoy seeing people learn new things. It has been my experience that when someone struggles to learn a new subject, the best method is to relate the subject in question to something more familiar. Patience and persistence are two very powerful tools. I believe in tutoring because it forces active participation. Once a pupil feels they can participate without fear, they can and wil ... read more

About my role as a teacher, I think that the main principle should be “teaching for understanding”. A teacher creates learning opportunities that engage students in thinking about important mathematical concepts. Facts and skills support such learning but are not the ultimate goal. A teacher not only draws on past knowledge of mathematics but continuously builds on and refines that knowledge during meaningful interactions with students and colleagues. Thus, her or his practice as a teacher is constantly evolving

A Little Bit About Me...

My method of teaching varies with the subject. A spanish tutor and a chemistry tutor can go about things quite differently. I like leading students to find answers on their own so that they understand the paths they are taking. That method is especially helpful in hard sciences and math. In the liberal arts (poli-sci, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.) I like to work in the Socratic method. I'll challenge the students on topics and concepts with questions that need some thought. I want them to discuss issues with me, and that allows me to help expand their understanding and discover weak points in their knowledge.
Since high school I've been working with my peers to help clarify subject matter, as that was my favorite method of study. In college I tutored under-classmen in Spanish, chemistry, and political science. Since graduating, I've worked with college freshmen as a writ ... read more

I would love the opportunity to teach grade school children. It was during my formidable years that I can recall a young lady who impacted my education in a very significant way. Additionally, I also have very fond memories of several children who I mentored through tutoring. My innate enthusiastic nature has facilitated a strong desire with the children to participate in the learning process in many unique ways. I gain tremendous joy and satisfaction through observing this process.
Earning a degree in Communications accelerated my skills in writing through Journalism, research papers and Rhetorical studies. Additionally, writing is something I enjoy and practice on a daily basis. It has been a number of years since I have tutored a child however, I would like to incorporate my vocational experience as well as my collegiate studies into my teaching practices.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching technique strictly focuses on the task at hand mainly for proper concentration. I value and encourage student questions because it demonstrates my knowledge and expertise about the material being taught. I do not tolerate immature and irresponsible behavior from a student because it hinders a student's progress when he/she is unwilling to listen or seriously apply my teaching towards the objectives he/she want to accomplish. I take into consideration a student's level of understanding for the material being taught and teach him/her accordingly. I believe that because of my experience with various types of mathematical content, I am confident students will reap the most advantageous benefits of my teaching!
Throughout my academic years, in the public school system and higher education, I excelled in mathematics. As a senior at Harding University High School in Charlotte, ... read more

Children have an inate desire to learn: My task is to "train them up in the way they should go, so that when they are old, they will not not depart from it." Inspiring my students to learn is my passion. Adapting my teaching to their learning style has always proven to be an effective technique.
Having taught and tutored middle school to community college level students for more than seven years, I work to inspire them to be active learners. I love working with children and had around 9 different children for a two year period while working at the mental health agency. They ranged from 3 years old to 16 years old. I am patient when teaching new subjects and very empathetic to different situations and needs. I have always worked to do the best and be the best and make a positive impact along the way. I believe with a positive mentality and hard work the possibilities are unlimited and through helping guide individuals with subjects they struggle and promoting good ethics they too can follow this mentality.
I graduated high school in 2003 as the valedictorian of my class. I maintained my high level of academics in college but didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. I graduated in 2007 with my business degree and moved to NC. I worked for a mental health agency helping children in broken homes with school wor ... read more
