My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.
I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. I have a passion for learning and love when I can help others learn complex material and pass classes. I have aced College Math up through Differential Equations and Calculus 3 algebra, trigonometry and geometry are foundations of the higher mathematics and therefore I understand them extremely well. Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach is to establish a relationship with small talk and introductions. A parent must be present at all times. I will keep up with the child's work load in the respective subject and also be in contact with their teacher. But my inital style will be repetition, which I found to be most productive during my time in the military. However, I realize that there many different methods to teaching. I will offer as many tools or resources that are needed to assist the child in learning the subject matter. And I will search continually to find the best method for the child and subject that we will study.

I graduated summa cum laude from the State University of NY College at Cortland with a BA in Secondary English Education in 1989. Following that, I held a variety of positions in education including teaching in pre-schools and tutoring centers. Additionally, I have 2 years experience as a substitute teacher in a variety of subjects. I also home-schooled my own children for 5 years. During one of those years, I taught 2nd and 3rd graders part-time in an After School Enrichment Program.
