Grammar is one of my top subjects!

I have been teaching students with special needs for the past 14 years. I have experience with preschool through 6th grade. I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center, where I worked with students through 12th grade. I especially enjoy working with students with Learning Disabilities, lower cognitive abilities, and children on the Autism Spectrum. I am trained in a reading program for children with Dyslexia. Contact me for more information.
I believe that every student has the ability to learn. Teachers must take the time to discover the individual needs of students in order to help all students be successful. I strive to provide individualized instruction in all areas and for all children. I firmly believe in involving a child's parents in all aspects of their education. Parents are a child's first teachers!

Trained English/ESL Tutor --Teaching With Compassion

I have taught (intermittently) college level English for 20 years. I have also taught ESL in public schools for 8 years. I now tutor on my own time any age level and anything related to English---including helping people finish memoirs or other books/novels. I am also a writer, working on a novel and screenplays/stageplays. I also write for local publications.
Teaching with compassion for the learner is my style of teaching. Making students understand their abilities and not dwell on any weaknesses are important for learning. I take ESL students at their level and help them make progress that is relevant to their lives.

More About This Tutor...

I've tutored two kids in my neighborhood for 40 buck every two weeks. It was a marvelous experience because they were very respectful young boys...majority of the time. It was kind of hard for them to keep their focus so i drew a plan which was rewarding them with candy and toys, and of course since it was my idea I didn't charge extra. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to tutor them anymore because had to move with my mother. All in all, no matter the task I will always try my best to achieve!!!

Possession is 9/10 of the law.. Description is 9/10 of saw.

I have been writing for my whole life, and have a love of the art that is description. Since Mich of humanity's understanding is based on metaphor, description and its subtleties is a key part of any writing process, be it creative or instructional. My favorite form of writing is creative, however I also enjoy writing essays and other pieces based on fact. No matter what form of writing you endeavor to do, getting your point across through description is paramount. I have placed and won poetry contests, and have written many essays of undergraduate and graduate levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

My goal when teaching a student is to explain the subject in the most simplest way possible. So next time the student is back in the classroom, they will have some understanding of what the teacher is teaching. I also like to get an understanding of the way the student learns. This helps me when deciding on teaching techniques.
I have over 10 years in tutoring elementary and high school students. I started tutoring in 2000 with the YMCA's after-school program. I stayed there for six years before taking a break to finish college. In summer 2009, I started tutoring with the Boys & Girls Club in Montevallo. Also in summer 2009, I started tutoring high school students from Bibb, Chilton, & Shelby counties through the Upward Bound program at the University of Montevallo. Most of my experience is working with students who have issues beyond a normal student whether it be learning disabilities, behavior problems,or emotional/phsychological issues. I have taught in many alternative school settings, but I have also taught in main stream schools, both public and private. I have successfully taught students to read and write when the system had given up on them, and on the flip side of the coin, I have taught advanced placement/honors students. I have taught grades seven through twelve.
I believe that learning needs to be fun, but that students need, and most of the time want, structure in their classrooms. I believe that learning needs to be relevant to students. They need to know why and where in their lives they will need or be using what they are being taught. I use a variety of instuctional methods while teaching (lecture, discussions, group activiti ... read more
