A Little Bit About Me...

While earning my MA in English at California State University, Fresno, I spent two exciting years teaching beginning college writing. I chose to teach the class for students who did not pass the entrance exam for Fresno State because I enjoyed working with the diverse, and primarily ESL, students who populated these classes. I also spent three years tutoring many terrific students there in reading and essay writing. Currently, I volunteer to tutor adults, and attend professional development meetings in tutoring, through the Tulare County Library’s “Read to Succeed” program.
My style of tutoring is skills-focused, with a goal of student independence. I am patient and work to facilitate a student’s ability to do the work herself, by giving her strategies for navigating her own work, and helping her to see, or mentally organize, reading and writing in new ways. For me, relating to children is effortless; I am quite apt to quickly gaining their attention as well as their confidence. Sadly, many students face the challenge of losing focus; as a teacher, I hope to be able to instill unwavering motivation and drive into each student, and help shape their characters that is essential in fulfilling a rewarding life as they enter into adulthood. All it takes is an influential mentor who is willing to put in 110 percent long after school hours are over. Educators should not only teach, but also still strive to continue to expand their own knowledge in order to exemplify to our students the importance of opening one's mind and broadening one's perspectives.
