I graduated from Sonoma State with a BA in English, Single subject emphasis. I am taking a year off before I go back to get my teaching credential in reading. The majority of my classes were geared towards the teaching of reading and writing and I feel confident in my ability to help students improve in those areas. I also worked in a High School writing center and tutored for the past two semesters. I love being around kids and helping them. Currently I live in Tahoe City, but am more than willing to drive to Reno or other areas as well. I have 6 years of substitute teaching experience in the Washoe County School District in Nevada, as well as at a charter school. Substitute teaching has allowed me to work with children from preschool to grade 12, in all subjects. I have worked twice as a preschool teacher, once at the E.L. Cord Child Care Center at TMCC in Reno, and again at His Kids Preschool, using A Beka Book curriculum to teach 2-4 year olds. My style of tutoring is creative flexibility. I assess the student's learning style and try to adapt to that, using different senses (kinetic, aural, oral) to trigger best responses. However, this is layered over a basic multi-part structure suited to the subject. I also like to set up a schedule of what our hour will be like, with some beginning exercises (usually recall from previous session). The rest of the hour would be structured with student input as much as possible. At the end, I like to introduce some free time to talk about the lesson and about any new ideas. I have a masters degree in Enviornmental Biology and a BA in pre-med sciences. I also have an AA degree in Dietetics. My other hat is a long career in writing, editing, and publishing.
