My comments on tutoring Drawing : Still Life, Portraits, Nonobjective, Scenery.

In Nassau, Bahamas, after graduating from high school in 2006, my grandmother encouraged me to take an Adobe Photoshop class that was being held at a nearby Technical School. I had know clue of how powerful a tool Photoshop was, but I thought I'd give attending that class a try because my grandmother told me that graphic design was the industry of the future. I fell in love with Photoshop's photo-manipulation capabilities, and I crashed about 3 computers in that year playing with this powerful design software like a kid with a coloring book. Fastforward 10 years and now I am a Photoshop expert. I've attained a Associates Degree in Digital Media Art, a Bachelors Degree in Studio Art, and I have added many other graphic design programs to my skill set. Graphic Design is just as much my passion as it is my job, and although I consider myself an experienced designer, I am continuously lea ... read more

Drawing is one of my top subjects!

I usually start off teaching the student basic utensil knowledge and slowly branch into oils from acrylic, first with no color so they will learn to see temperature. After we will learn the importance of white and how to not overuse such a strong hue. After this we will work from still-lives and also self-portraiture.
I have been painting for 6+ years and am very willing to share my knowledge of the tricky medium to anyone willing to learn it. Oils are my forte however I've worked in most other mediums a time or two. My current work is fully abstract but I have plenty of images of works that show my technical expertise.

More About This Tutor...

Four years ago, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from a local university. I received a BS in Rehabilitation Studies. This degree prepared me to work with our special population. My ultimate desire was to work with children. Therefore, I returned to UNCG and obtained my License in Special Education K-12. Over the past four years, I have successfully worked in the public school system. I teach at the elementary level which allows me to teach Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. My favorite subject matter is teaching children to read! This past year I was a lead tutor after-school for Reading and Math.
Teaching is an exciting profession for me. I believe all kids including the most intellectually disabled can learn. I believe in setting high but realistic goals for students. Learning starts before children enter school and should be integrated between home and school. I am a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have children of my own and have always enjoyed experiencing learning through their eyes and observing the different ways in which they learn. I am comfortable working with all age ranges and can accommodate special needs that a student might have. I relate well with most children and view them as a whole child with many strengths and weaknesses. Each is unique and may require multiple modes of instruction. I understand the learning process and what research shows about good learning and I want to see each student succeed—whatever that might mean for each particular student. I believe learning should be fun and enjoyable, regardless of the subject and that these work habits benefit them later in life.
I have always loved learning and have earned several degrees in Psychology (BA), Art (AA), Spanish (Minor) and Psychometry (Tests and Measurement) (EdS) and continue to educate mys ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.

More About This Tutor...

As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. Additionally I work particularly well with withdrawn children who need special attention.
My teaching style is simple. As it has not been professionally nurtured I have taken my ques from those I have taught. It is simply to provide what is needed. I prefer to spend time with a student and learn what works for them. I believe trial of multiple styles to find success is critical to each student. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with having fun while you learn!

A Little Bit About Me...

I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center. It is there where I tutored once weekly as a senior, up until I graduated in May. I have tutored in all subjects and all ages up through 22.
When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their fav ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After graduating from North Carolina State University, I began to apply and share the value of learning and education with my community. I developed an edible schoolyard curriculum and garden that integrated math, science, and social studies as part of the core curriculum. The elementary students were highy enthusiastic in the opportunity to engage in this experiential approach to education. I then moved into a high school atmosphere, where I created an environmental education program and a peformance studies program.
I believe that there are several learning modalities. In response to this, I use an experimental approach to teaching. This enables the student to fully engage in the material in a way that allows them to understand and apply the information. I also find it necessary to create a learning environment that is relaxed, non-stressful and creative. Some possibilties are ... read more

I believe that all children can learn and all children are capable of learning. But, all students learn differently, so, I feel that by changing lessons and incorporating different things into each one to accomodate most, or all, students is necessary. When children are able to learn and gain experiences on their own, with little or no teacher intervention, they learn at their best. By doing fun activities, children are able to gain and retain knowledge better. I want to be able to help children as much as I can, while still letting them learn on their own by making new discoveries.
As a graduate with a BS degree in Elementary Education, I have gained knowledge in the practice of teaching elementary school. I have been able to observe classrooms as well as student teach. I began tutoring Spanish as an undergraduate twenty-five years ago. In college, graduate school and as a professor I wrote literary analyses in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Many of these papers were written from historical, sociological or psychoanalytic perspectives. I taught all levels of undergraduate Spanish, and some graduate courses. I have taught English as a second language. I have basic vocabuary skills in Arabic, Russian and French and can ask and answer basic questions in Russian and French. I also have a knowledge of the written alphabet in Russian.
My teaching style for Spanish is proficiency-based, culture-based and student-centered. My college students master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar through writing grocery lists, ordering from a menu, describing how they are feeling, and even decorating skull cookies for the Day of the Dead. On a similar note, I te ... read more

First and foremost, I love working with students. I believe all students have an ability to learn once you find the way to connect with them. I think the key is in finding that particular connection because each student is gifted in his or her own special way. All people learn differently, and I approach teaching with this understanding and appreciation of the differences in all students and their backgrounds. I think students benefit from a sort of structured guidance that sets them on the right path to learning the material but gives them the room and freedom to feel a sense of empowerment through their own discovery of the embedded lessons. I believe this sense of empowerment and the building of self-esteem through successful learning is a key factor in helping students reach their full potential academically and in life.
In my educational and professional life, I have focused o ... read more
