I am a, recently retired teacher as of, June 2013, and have thirty one years of teaching experience, within, a variety of school settings. I am certified in elementary education, grades 1-8, hearing impaired grades k-12, and moderate to severe disabilities. My last position was at a local high school, teaching students with cognitive disabilities. I have always enjoyed playing the piano. And I took extreme satisfaction from teaching piano. I would sit beside them while they played the pieces I had assigned to them to practice since the previous lesson. If they had problems or questions about something, I was there to help. We'd talk and laugh, and I hoped they learned through it all. Above all, I never wanted to yell at them or berate them, because I knew they'd never learn if they felt pressured or thought I was there only to critize them. While I don't think I ever had any junior Beethovens, I'd like to think there are several people out there now who still enjoy sitting down at a piano every now and then to play something.
