My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I am a special education teacher and have worked with a couple students with Dyslexia.

My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. There, I taught them the core subjects of Math, Reading, and Writing, and went into their regular education classes to help them with study skills, Science, and Social Studies. The second classroom was a high school classroom for students with emotional disturbance. There, I taught Health, English, and Vocational Education to ... read more

Hi.. I am a special educator handling children with mild and moderate dyslexia. I was working in the mainstream line and realized that there were children who were slow learners or in other words needed to be taught in a way they could learn.I explored and educated myself on those lines.I am currently working in an organization which caters to such children.Patience and empathy works wonders with these children. Each student is unique and has his/her style of learning. Each case of dyslexia is unique because it results from a combination of an underlying talent, or predisposition, and from environmental influences and unsuccessful learning experiences. As a result, no two dyslexics will have exactly the same set of symptoms. Understanding and working consistently can make the difference between giving up and trying again :)

More About This Tutor...

I am currently a Special Education student at Northern Illinois University. I at the beginning of the education program and think this would an excellent chance to start teaching. I have a vast background in science, being that my first major was biology.
I think I can provide exceptional one on one tutoring for a student of any age. My knowledge has been spread out throughout my college years and this would be a great first step into teaching. I am willing to do whatever a child needs in order for them to fully grasp a concept. I often think outside of the box and think I can provide some creativeness that other teachers cannot.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from Northern Illinois University, I have had several experiences teaching children at the elementary and middle school age. I was a nanny for a family of three for a year right after graduating. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to create my own lessons and activities for the children. The following year I was a substitute teacher in Wisconsin for various grade levels and loved each experience. I am looking forward to beginning to substitute teach again this December in the DeKalb area.
I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that prov ... read more

The first thing I would want to know about my students is how do they learn. This would allow me to develop lesson plans that would be meaningful and productive to them. Another area that I feel is necessary would be their current abilities. Doing curriculum-based assessments would allow me to align and differentiate the curriculum to their levels. Finally, it is very important to just know the students. What their strengths and their interests are so the lessons are significant to them.
I was a self-contained and resource teacher at both the elementary and middle school. My role was to provide differentiated lessons to met the various needs and abilities, write and update measureable IEPs aligned to state standards, do curriculum assessment, data collection, do case studies, mentor new Special Education teachers, team teach, and work collaboratively with therapists, social w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

If I had to pick one style it would be direct teaching. Although being a special education teacher I also use the cognitive strategy instruction. This approach is very helpful as a tool to help students develop the necessary skills to be self-regulated learners. One should continually differentiate the lesson utilizing all the modalities. When I facilitate interaction between the class it will depend on the lesson sometimes having the whole class participate is the way to go, other times it is helpful to employ small groups. I believe you have to be versatile yet consistent I feel this is important for the learning styles of the students.
As a seasoned teacher I have accomplished many attributes. I have earned a bachelor's in Music and a masters in Special ed. In addition I believe that teaching is not like any other profession, it challenges you in every way possible from b ... read more

I teach to the needs and style of the child. I understand that each child has a specific style of learning. I vary my teaching with visual, auditory, and multi-sensory aids. All of my teaching includes a great deal of patience and humor! I have had great success in each child I have tutored, whether this has involved understanding, grades, or self-esteem.
I have taught, tutored and administered educational programs for over 15 years. These experiences included teaching 1st and 4th grade, tutoring grades 1-8, writing assistance for high school and university students, teaching ESL to youth and adult, GED prep for youth and adults, and managing two adult education programs.
