My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I am a special education teacher and have worked with a couple students with Dyslexia.

My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. I was working in the mainstream line and realized that there were children who were slow learners or in other words needed to be taught in a way they could learn.I explored and educated myself on those lines.I am currently working in an organization which caters to such children.Patience and empathy works wonders with these children.Each student is unique and has his/her style of learning.Each case of dyslexia is unique because it results from a combination of an underlying talent, or predisposition, and from environmental influences and unsuccessful learning experiences. As a result, no two dyslexics will have exactly the same set of symptoms. Understanding and working consistently can make the difference between giving up and trying again :)

I am currently a Special Education student at Northern Illinois University. I at the beginning of the education program and think this would an excellent chance to start teaching. I have a vast background in science, being that my first major was biology.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from Northern Illinois University, I have had several experiences teaching children at the elementary and middle school age. I was a nanny for a family of three for a year right after graduating. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to create my own lessons and activities for the children. The following year I was a substitute teacher in Wisconsin for various grade levels and loved each experience. The first thing I would want to know about my students is how do they learn. This would allow me to develop lesson plans that would be meaningful and productive to them. Another area that I feel is necessary would be their current abilities. Doing curriculum-based assessments would allow me to align and differentiate the curriculum to their levels. Finally, it is very important to just know the students. What their strengths and their interests are so the lessons are significant to them.

A Little Bit About Me...

If I had to pick one style it would be direct teaching. Although being a special education teacher I also use the cognitive strategy instruction. This approach is very helpful as a tool to help students develop the necessary skills to be self-regulated learners. One should continually differentiate the lesson utilizing all the modalities. When I facilitate interaction between the class it will depend on the lesson sometimes having the whole class participate is the way to go, other times it is helpful to employ small groups. I believe you have to be versatile yet consistent I feel this is important for the learning styles of the students.
