I am currently working on a Master's degree, and recently received my TESOL certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My teaching style has two main tenets. First, I believe that students should be the focus of instruction. I facilitate learning best when I discover how students process information, for I am able to present information in uniquely meaningful ways. Therefore, I encourage discussions and ask questions regularly, and change teaching strategies promptly as needed. Second, I believe that students learn best from actively engaging the material.
