Learning is a lifelong process!

Every student is unique and benefits from an individualized instruction. My style is business casual; I am firm yet warm and encouraging with students.
My very first year of teaching was at the Lehigh Valley Performing Arts High School, and I also taught for two years at Northern Lehigh High School. Currently, I am resigned and staying home, but looking to work part time. I have experience teaching grades 7-12 and working with all types of students. The classes I've taught range from Honors English to a class which targeted students struggling to gain proficiency in English related PSSA skills.

Creative Writing is one of my top subjects!

I hope to make learning fun, not drudgery. I will do my best to make it interesting and something to look forward to!
I am currently working on a Master's degree, and recently received my TESOL certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). So if you have any issues with English as a second language, I can help with that, as well as any types of writing (I've worked as a writer and editor in several different fields). My B.A. degree is in English, with a minor in Communications. I worked as a tutor to put myself through college.

My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.
As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. I aim to encourage the critical thinking that will serve students not only in the classroom, but throughout their lives. In my experience, I have become well-versed in student-centered curriculum develo ... read more

My teaching methods include brainstorming, thought organization, use of the thesaurus, and use of adverb and adjective clauses to overcome writer’s block. These are in part “taught” but also developed by recognition and support of inborn talents. Operative use of vocabulary is also imperative to the development of both writing and speaking skills. Practice is as much a key to success as it is in sports, music, or in any discipline. Research is an important tool in the process of effective writing as well as speaking. Research skills are best taught by demonstration. Didactic methods are dry and uninspiring. It is best to teach research skills by actually working with the student.
For more than twenty years I have had experience in report writing, creative writing, speech writing, resumes, and projects. My expertise lies not only in the proficient use of the English langu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am very passionate and knowledgeable about the field of English. In my opinion, writing well and reading critically comprise the foundation of educational success. Both my BA and MA degrees are in English. I also hold a Post-Master's Certificate in Education with a specialization in College Teaching. This certificate provided me with both knowledge about the best methods for educating college students and practice utilizing these methods as a Teaching Assistant. Beyond formal schooling, I was employed as a high school Language Arts Intern and worked as a college English Intern who provided help and instruction regarding writing skills. Currently, I am a certified Adult Literacy Tutor; I tutor my student weekly.
My teaching style has two main tenets. First, I believe that students should be the focus of instruction. I facilitate learning best when I discover how students p ... read more

I am patient and encouraging. I have a talent for identifying how people learn. It is important to know what works with people in order to dail into the proper approach. Some people can read and immediately understand. Others need the repetition of hands-on experience. Some need memory tricks like "Mickey Mouse" for spelling "accoMModate" or "seize the weird sheik at your Leisure" for remembering exceptions to the "i-before-e" rule. On writing, I have had reporters mired in a fact-filled story actually write single sentences, each containing one fact. Then, I've had them order the facts. I am patient in helping people organize thoughts. I help people collect and organize information and to present it

I completed my bachelor degree in English in three and a half years at Bucknell University, and this has trained me in writing, literary analysis, and oral communication. While at Bucknell, I spent four months tutoring children at a local elementary school in grades 3-5 in math, science, and reading. I, also, completed Bucknell’s Writing Center four month training course for tutoring in all types of writing. I spent a full year tutoring peers, underclassmen, and even graduate students in their writing process. Finally, for the last three years, I have taught techniques of interpreting the Bible to college and high school students at my local church in both group and one-on-one settings.
I have a passion for teaching people things that I love to do. I love to write, to analyze literature, and to solve problems. I bring energy and patience to the learning experience, and I am able to ... read more

I am a firm believer that every student has a unique way of learning. Every student is different and therefore no student should be taught the same. In my classroom I intertwine the works of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence with Dewey's Constructivism to create an interactive learning environment. It is a goal of mine to allow each student to show their ability in the best manner that they can. Through the philosophy I teach by, I feel I reach each student to address their own unique abilities and skills. During the course of my studies I have come across a quote that as a teacher I live by, "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn."
I have had various experiences from Pre-K through the middle school age, with a strong concentration in Language Arts at the primary level. I am Elementary School certified K-8 and I am Highly Qual ... read more

I've worked with a wide array of students; they span from two year old children to non-traditional (i.e. older than usual) college students. I'm extremely patient and considerate, and I have experience interacting with children who have problems focusing. In my time at the University of Pittsburgh I've learned different methods of tutoring peers. However, I do maintain one principle: positivity. No particular student will feel like they made any progress if they do not receive encouragement for their progress. When a student feels like they can observe their own progress, they feel better about themselves. My goal is to explain, encourage, and focus the student until they master the material.
I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a dual-major in English Writing and History. These two branches of academia shaped and built my ability to write concise, intellectu ... read more

My interest in writing began in high school, where I was newspaper editor and won the Senior Excellence Award in English. In college, I majored in English. My graduate studies required advanced research writing, including a master's thesis and a Ph.D. dissertation. I was a writer/editor at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical College. I taught at Hunter College and Hebrew Union College. More recently, I consulted for Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, where I drafted text for the school's web site. I have taught undergraduates at Hunter College and graduate rabbinical students and adults at Hebrew Union College. I currently teach research writing to graduate students at the College of Saint Elizabeth (NJ).
