I took high school and college seriously. After college I worked for several years before attending law school. After law school I decided to combine my legal experience with hands-on medical skills, and I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at SUNY Delhi, which I will complete next May. This summer is a lull before completing my education and embarking on a medical administration career.
I believe effective learning can occur in a 1-on-1 tutoring situation when the tutor and the student can communicate well. Tone, mood, and setting all come into play. I ask many questions to check the students responsiveness and understanding of key areas of the topics including a reinforcing of the ideas being learned. I cannot count how many students I have had come in frustrated and confused and then quickly answer questions that were simple and built up to understanding harder ideas by the end of a session. And the best award of all is seeing joy and elation that they have a good chance of getting a high grade after learning material.
