I was taught to teach by "Socratic Method" which is possibly the best way to teach/tutor. I ask many questions to check the students responsiveness and understanding of key areas of the topics including a reinforcing of the ideas being learned. I cannot count how many students I have had come in frustrated and confused and then quickly answer questions that were simple and built up to understanding harder ideas by the end of a session. And the best award of all is seeing joy and elation that they have a good chance of getting a high grade after learning material. If one understands the motivation for the rules they can better anticipate how items should be handled and they are more likely to retain information. Simply memorizing facts and rules doesn't serve students well in the long run and that approach is only as good as their ability to recall the proper information at the right time.
