I have about 9 yrs. of experience in science research at the University. During that time, I have been responsible for teaching several graduate and undergraduate students. I have also been an adjunct professor at UNL and Nebraska Wesleyan. For the last 9 years I have been a math and science Mentor for Lincoln Public Schools. I teach to the student. I find exactly what their strengths are and incorporate it in some way to learn something new. Education is a set of building blocks and can only be as strong as the foundation. I graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I spent a year as a Substitute Teacher in Lincoln, NE. I then took a year and a half break from teaching to recruit for a small college. I went back into teaching as a grade 7-12 mathematics teacher. I was responsible for the 7th grade through pre-calculus courses at Wheatland Public Schools in Madrid Nebraska. This school was then combined into Grant Public Schools. I am also a strong technical trainer in my current role and provide necessary computer and analytical training to all new associates at the current company I work for.

I see teaching as a dialog between teacher and student and adjust the speed and depth of my teaching to best help the student succeed. Most importantly I want to the student to leave with a greater understanding of the subject than when they entered. I taught recitation for Honors Differential Equations, Differential Equations, Calculus 3, Calculus 2 and Introduction to Computer Science as an undergraduate at Georgia Tech and physics and astronomy labs as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I was consistently rated highly as a teacher by students.

My main experience lies in working with elementary aged children in literacy and religious education programs. However, I received a bachelors degree in political science from DePauw University and a law degree (with honors) from the University of Nebraska, so I have a great deal of educational experience to draw from in teaching students as a tutor. In addition to my educational experience, I also have “real world” business experience and excellent research and writing skills through working as an attorney, all of which I will also draw from while tutoring. Every student has different needs and learns in a unique way, so it is important for me to teach in both visual and more concrete forms depending on the pupil. In my opinion, being a teacher is more about being a continual learner than it is about banking knowledge into the mind of a subject, and as a constructivist I look to build a lasting relationship with each of the people I tutor; I feel this approach is both more rewarding for myself as the teacher, but also more productive for the student as it is akin to my personal philosophy that a pupil "does not care what you know until they know that you care."
