Experience Summary
Mathematics and Statistics are areas of study that have followed me throughout my life, from competition in MathCounts in Kansas and finishing 25th in the state, to scoring 35's twice on the Mathematics section of the ACT twice, but more importantly in tutoring my peers and other students younger than me in high school on a variety of relevant curriculum. Studying Philosophy at Grinnell College, ultimately earning a BA, gave me the tools I need to communicate effectively, both in the written format and verbally, in order to succeed in transferring, collaborating on, and learning highly analytical concepts with others.
Teaching Style
Every student has different needs and learns in a unique way, so it is important for me to teach in both visual and more concrete forms depending on the pupil. In my opinion, being a teacher is more about being a continual learner than it is about banking knowledge into the mind of a subject, and as a constructivist I look to build a lasting relationship with each of the people I tutor; I feel this approach is both more rewarding for myself as the teacher, but also more productive for the student as it is akin to my personal philosophy that a pupil "does not care what you know until they know that you care."
