I remember as a student, often times I could not fully understand a new subject until I learned “why”. I believe that most children (and young adults), being inquisitive in nature, need to know “why”, not just “what”, “who”, or whatever else is important to learn. “Why” makes things make sense, and allows connections to be made to related concepts. I took a class on abstract mathematics that followed Moore's teaching method, where the student would show their work in front of the class and instructor everyday for a part of the class. I would not be this strict because it is a little nerve wracking, but I do think some of it's principles are most instructive.
