Experience Summary
I have tutored math twice, in two different environments. The first time was to native Spanish speakers who were studying to earn their GED. Tutoring was done in small groups, once or twice per week. We covered everything ranging from two digit addition to basic algebra. My second time tutoring, I tutored a high school trigonometry student. I met with the student at her home, at the hours that best suited her. Her grade improved from a C to an A over the course of a semester.
My degree is in chemistry, so I feel very comfortable tutoring in that subject. In the course of earning my degree, I was required to take several courses in math and physics, so I would also feel comfortable tutoring those subjects as well.
Teaching Style
I remember as a student, often times I could not fully understand a new subject until I learned “why”. I believe that most children (and young adults), being inquisitive in nature, need to know “why”, not just “what”, “who”, or whatever else is important to learn. “Why” makes things make sense, and allows connections to be made to related concepts.
When teaching, I try to get students to understand “why” as much as possible. I also try to get them to do as much as possible, make them work for the answers, instead of spoon feeding them. I am very patient, and will take the time to teach a concept as many times as necessary, without getting frustrated, and without frustration the student.
