I remember as a student, often times I could not fully understand a new subject until I learned “why”. I believe that most children (and young adults), being inquisitive in nature, need to know “why”, not just “what”, “who”, or whatever else is important to learn. “Why” makes things make sense, and allows connections to be made to related concepts. When teaching, I try to get students to understand “why” as much as possible. I also try to get them to do as much as possible, make them work for the answers, instead of spoon feeding them. My teaching style is dependent on the student. With some students I find that they just need initial guidance from me before I let them be independent with their assignments. With other students I have found that they need me to hold their hand, so to speak, during the whole process. When that is the case I make sure that the student does not feel inadequate by having me walk them through each assignment.
