My comments on tutoring World History : I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade. I am certified K-6th grade. I also taught advanced and Intermediate math and language arts in a GED/HiSet program. I currently teach ESOL/CIVICS for an Adult School.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. I teach the foundation and build upon that based upon what is relevant in a particular field today. I also include student-centered teaching strategies. I believe in order to learn a student must have base knowledge of a subject that leads into hands on assignments which require mastery of a subject. During my last two years at Shorter University, I was employed by both the Shorter University Writing Center and the Shorter University Periscope (the newspaper). I spent those two years tutoring students on the composition and structure of essays, and helped them edit and proofread their work. As an editor for the newspaper, I was a mentor to all of my staff writers, as well as a contributor myself.
I believe that the best way to teach a child or student is by listening to them first. By understanding what they see in the subject, I am able to put what they need to learn into perspective for them. I always find myself trying to lead others to figure out material on their own as a I set guidelines for them as they do so. I believe this is the best way for them to learn the material.
