I started substitute teaching in 1983 while I was working on my Master's Degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have been a substitute teacher in Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Glendale, and Palm Springs. One of the key elements of tutoring is communication between the tutor and student. Encouraging discussion instead of lecturing of the subject is important. Facilitating good rapport allows me to understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allows focus on the weak areas. For example, does the student primarily utilize rote memorization or is he/she capable of a higher level of critical thinking? Someone who is more familiar with memorization as a way of learning can be taught to expand their understanding of the subject if the right questions are asked to them. Someone that demonstrates higher critical thinking skills might do better with repetitive exercises on the subject which encourages focus and application.
