As a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, I worked with local youth in a Fijian village over the course of two years. I created a study groups based on education level and subject matter for the young adults living in the community. I focused lessons on English reading and comprehension, effective writing skills, algebra, calculus, and basic science. Working with youth from another culture and in a foriegn language forced me to gain strong interpersonal skills, innovative ways to tutor students, and the patience to work with students to achieve their academic goals.

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.
