My comments on tutoring Special Education : I have experience volunteering in an after-school program with children with learning disabilities and with MR/DD individuals.

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.

The voyage of deepening a child’s enthusiasm to write and read well is so delightful and satisfying! This revelation didn’t come in my writing courses in high school or college but when I taught my four children to read and write. Now that they’re all in college or graduated from college, I once again became available for tutoring. Several college and university students can attest that with my tutoring their writing has become stronger and their grades have risen.
