2012-2013-SES Tutor, Escambia County, Florida- Provided tutoring for elementary aged students via a vendor for the county, Tutored Reading and Comprehension and Math to students who did not score well on standardized tests. 2010-2013-Private Tutor for several companies and independently, Tutored students of all ages in a variety of subjects at local libraries and in their homes.
One on one approach using a variety of instructional materials such as workbooks, worksheets, diagrams, flash cards, independent writing assignments and educational websites to promote and improve learning skills. Parents are briefed on progress after each session. Together, parents, students and I can work to promote and improve learning skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

In the past, my classes have lasted up to three hours at a time. Thus, I have been forced to implement new methodologies in order to not only keep my students focused and interested, but continually learning as well. I incorporate fun activities such as creative writing and music into my lessons while still closely following the curriculum. A Little Bit About Me...

In my military experience, I see all sorts of learning styles and ability levels. I am able to break down hard concepts of math/science/engineering so that regardless of learning style, we can work towards understanding. I find that many students struggle because no professor has taken the time to relate it to the student in a way that they can internalize and retain. I firmly believe that everyone can reach their potential if high expectations are set and a path to reach goals is set forth. I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

I love the written word and reaching people, so I ultimately chose to major in journalism. My love for teaching and instructing students led me to pursue my minor in education. In the past three years, I've tutored undergraduates in writing (grammar, composition, etc), graduate students (editing theses), proofing resumes and technical documents, and tutoring elementary and high school students in reading and basic math.
