Professional Tutoring for Elementary and Middle School Ages

A Little Bit About Me...

There are many buzz words and phrases applied to teachers and teaching styles. While I perfectly respect all of these new theories and methods of both teaching and learning, it must not be forgotten that each student is unique in their style and commitment. Otherwise, they would not need tutoring! Creativity and patience are the keys to discovering the specific style that best suites the student. That being said, I do of course have a "style". A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or understand the material, and exercising hands-on work and examples to ensure the student can apply what they have learned.

Our school accepts students from 12-17 and I work with students in each age/grade level. I helped create our school's After School Program and I currently run the program. This entails me working with girls on their own individual goals that span all grades, all learning levels, and subjects. Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor.
