I have been a professional print/broadcast journalist for roughly 15 years. I am a perpetual student and am currently finishing my bachelors in communications online at the University of Tampa and have been accepted in their Master of Fine Arts program for Film Studies. An MFA is a terminal degree, so I will be qualified to teach on a collegiate level upon graduation. As reality often transcends policy, I currently take interns from a local SUNY institution and mentor young broadcasters, so as technology evolves, I will as well. My main body of work is primarily broadcast, but I regularly produce print articles for both online and print publications. Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.

All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
