While in college, I spent my time home from school substitute teaching through Frederick County Public Schools. After graduation from American University, I continued to substitute and in the fall of 2005 I took a part-time position at a middle school, teaching Theatre Arts and Music Performance Lab. While teaching, I began my teaching certification through the Maryland State Department of Education, where I completed a course called Inclusion: Making it Happen. Not every method works for every child; with one exception, patience. I demonstrate and exemplify patience. If a child feels as though they are in an atmosphere where they are safe, free of ridicule and bias, then they are willing to perform. This process can be a give take scenario however. So, some flexibility is required as well, but eventually the student will become more comfortable with themselves and confident in what they are capable of.
