My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : 683 score - 99th percentile

I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult takes an interest in the child's world, and shares that interest in a positive reinforcing manner, it opens to door to learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Having taught small and large classes, as well as one-on-one, I am a firm believer in the benefit that one-on-one and small group instruction can offer for students. As a teacher, I love being able to identify and capitalize on students' interests and strengths. I believe that all students can learn, and fully embrace and utilize the concepts of learning styles and multiple intelligences to help all students find success, regardless of the area of study.

I love working with children, as I have coached or tutored school aged children for the last six years. This has taught me to be very patient as well as given me the ability to approach a subject from three or four different angles until the student gets it. I often ask many questions in an attempt to get the student to come to conclusions on their own, rather than me telling them outright. This allows the student to put things in their own terms, a process which I believe allows for a deeper understanding of the material.

I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along. I have always enjoyed leading students to that 'eureka' moment where they have grasped a difficult idea or concept, put it in their own words, and communicated it back to me, the teacher.
