My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : Tutored at JC

I have taught internship classes and tutored statistics at the University level. I have tutored mathematics from elementary to calculus at a junior college. I have been a GRE instructor for the Stanley Kaplan company I founded, owned and operated the Idaho School of Professional Hypnosis for 10 years, teaching hypnosis and hypnotherapy at a professional level. I co-developed the curriculum, designed the teaching strategy, and was the lead instructor.
I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult ta ... read more

I have yet to professionally tutor anyone, but I have a lot of experience aiding others with homework and questions. I have always received high grades in all of my courses, with over a 4.0 G.P.A. in high school, so I am very knowledgeable and would be able to assist in many subjects. I am also in my third year of undergraduate studies, so I am still learning more and can possibly have access to other resources.
I am very relaxed, but be sure to have a positive attitude!

Don't tell me 2+2=4. Tell me WHY 2+2=4.

Although I wish I could count the endless amount of time I spent playing teacher as a child, I know parents are looking for more expierence than an eight year old and her dolls. I have tutored children, ages ranging from eight to fourteen, off and on for three years. I have expierence and am personally more comfortable helping with English and math centered tutoring for any grade level but am able to help with other elementary level classes.I've had the privilege to help with the passionate and the difficult and have been able to produce satisfactory results for all parties involved.
My teaching style differs with each child. One child does well learning by applying the material to real live situations Another does better with breaking it down and just memorizing facts I am very flexible and make an effort to find the best method to save both myself and the child time that would ... read more

Mathematics can be fun,,, REALLY

I have been tutoring friends and family in mathematics for thirty years, and as I enjoy this I started Tutoring. I love mathematics and teaching mathematics. And I can teach a love or at least a like for mathematics. (and I have to have 300 characters here ?, I have been accused of rambling before, but can I make it to 300 ?, OH great I made it to 300)
Teaching Style : Teaching style has to adjust to student. I know the subject, I must know how the student learns and adapt my teaching to that.

10 years experience teaching chemistry!

I have 10 years of experience teaching chemistry labs: general chemistry and organic chemistry. I also have 10 years of experience tutoring chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry at the college level. I enjoy helping people learn. I've often had students say something like, "Oh! I finally understand. My lecture professor taught me this, but I didn't understand it until now!"
Lots of different ways to approach the problem. If you don't understand it one way, I can usually help you attack the problem from a "different direction."

Let's learn academics together.

I have worked hard at learning German. Although all I speak right now fluently is German and English, I am working on French as well. Having this cornerstone in languages is very important to success as a tutor, because unless you can explain things, you're unable to succeed. I also think in a very step-by-step process, and found that this brought me academic success in Mathematics and Computer Science. This is a very successful combination, as I will prove to be a good asset in your company.
I aim to work with people, by basically a read of the person and then testing them if I need more information. This then gives me the opportunity to relate to them on the many levels an effective teacher has to relate to make the child successful. The idea is to figure out what works on a given student and take their strengths and develop them. This is best done on a case by case basis ... read more

I believe anyone can learn. Some may have to work harder at it than others. With others you may need to find different approaches but anyone can learn. In my classrooms I teach the individual students not the class. The biggest challenge for a teacher is giving the students the confidence that they can learn. Teach a student how to learn and he will learn anything he wants to.
I was a teacher at a Christian Boarding school in California for 27 years. I taught Junior High and High School Math and Science as well as Wood Shop, Metal Shop and Physical Education. Currently I teach High School Math and Science in Marsing, Idaho.

One of my greatest tools has been mathematics. I enjoy working with numbers and solving problems. At Boise State University I was the coordinator and facilitator for the Active Learning in Mathematics Program, I lead a twelve member engineering student team and coordinated twenty plus math sessions. I was promoted based on leadership roles, determination, team work, going beyond job requirements to achieve objectives, and implemented new ideas. I improved the program by increasing student attendance, availability, collaboration, and teaching skills. Being passionate in engineering and mathematics has helped me achieve many goals, for example obtaining a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and being able help others succeed.
Making a difference in other people’s lives & having the pleasure to teach them valuable skills has been a gifted experience. With great leadership & en ... read more

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past 2 years since graduating from the University of Oregon I have been working full-time as Psychosocial Rehabilitator within the educational environment of various elementary and secondary schools. I currently manage a Therapeutic Learning Center focused on behavioral modification within the Special Education Department of a local high school. I have experience working with a group of students with disabilities such as: Autism, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Emotional Distressed, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Anger Management Issues. Most of my time is spent in a one-on-one situation with the student. I have a strong background in Math, Social Studies and History.
Working with such a diverse population of students ranging from grades 3-12, I have learned that each child processes information in different ways. Assisting them in overcoming their learning disability ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to see people learn and the look on their faces once they understand. I do not believe that one style of teaching works for everyone. I like to work with the individual to evaluate how they learn before starting to teach.
Over the past 15 years or more I have mentored and coached hundreds of individuals. The primary areas of focus were math, statics (Statistical Process Control, Design of Experiments and Data Analysis) and Physics (Thermo Dynamics, Electronics and Modeling Processes plus problem solving).

I am passionate about learning and education. I know that all children have the ability to learn and excel in all subjects and that the positive effects of that success can last a lifetime. I approach teaching through positive communication and interaction. To be able to learn, a child must trust the teacher and develop the motivation to learn. Through consistent work, enthusiasm, and positive reinforcement, every child has the potential for success.
I have had the opportunity to work in the role of tutor for the past five years. I have worked in a correctional setting helping individuals prepare for the GED tests in math, writing, reading, science, and social studies. I have also had the opportunity to tutor younger students in a private setting in the subjects of reading, math, and science. I have earned my bachelor of science in sociology from Boise State University and have bee ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.
Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggl ... read more
