Effective, caring tutoring from an experienced tutor

I have been tutoring in math since I was in Jr High. Initially my students were sisters and brothers, then nephews and nieces, and finally I began tutoring as a second career. My background includes 30 years as an engineer and engineering manager, as well as teaching math at the community college level and volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. I love applying math to real world problems, and I do my best to come up with pertinent examples to help a student learn a new concept.

I believe in being hands on and visual, many students have problems in math and science because they are unable to visualize the words written in their books. I am extremly organized so that my time is best spent on the most difficult areas for each individual student.
I have a BS in Biology and Genetics from North Carolina State University. I have recently taken a refresher course in Anatomy and Physiology to go back to school for radiology. I have a BS in Cybernetics Engineering. As an engineer, my knowledge of math and physics is high. As a student I solved so many operations involving calculus that I memorized the formulas and used them as fast as the multiplication tables. I am a native Spanish speaker. I was trained as a language teacher by Berlitz, one of the best language centers in the world. I have a certificate in Drama. I worked for a private elementary school as a drama teacher for 2 years.

As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. I earned a B.A. in Mathematics at UNC-A and completed one year of graduate school in Mathematics at UNC-CH while teaching Pre-Calculus at the university for 2 college semesters. I completed all coursework to sit for the CPA exam and successfully passed the exam in 1994. I am currently working on a volunteer basis for the Asheville City Schools Foundation as an Academic Coach and Mentor in Math at the Asheville Middle School.
Today's learners enjoy a more relaxed and informal style of teaching.
