Effective, caring tutoring from an experienced tutor

I summarize my approach to tutoring with "3 E's": Enthusiasm, Engagement, and Encouragement. I try hard to make each session fun and to engage the student in seeking the solution, rather than just teaching him or her a method.
I have been tutoring in math since I was in Jr High. Initially my students were sisters and brothers, then nephews and nieces, and finally I began tutoring as a second career. My passion is teaching mathematics. After a single year of retirement I missed teaching so much that I now either teach or tutor at three locations. In the classroom I have a casual, informal style that is more like a conversation with my students than a formal lecture. After presenting a problem for students to analyze and solve, my most common tactic is to ask a series of scaffolded (rather than Socratic) questions-designed to lead students to their own method to resolve the situation.
