Young grandmother with open heart and open mind

On the professional end, I was an accountant (CFO type) for a very long time. My most recent "job," though, was publishing a natural health magazine (4 years). I walked away from it all late summer 2011 to work my spiritual path and providing patient and heart-centered tutoring to elementary children works well with this path. Children can feel that I enjoy them so they like me. I am a grandmother of two (2 and 6). Contact me at CarolinaLightWave@gmail.com to set up a meeting. With gratitude, Barbara

I have worn many hats and done many things that all apply to the classroom and teaching young people. I believe that education is the key to life and living. But a person has to believe they can do it first and I believe everyone can learn and should be given the opportunity
I ask a lot of questions to get the students thinking. I believe in teaching young people and the adults I have worked with to think critically fist. Then I work with them on being able to articulate and write their ideas down...subject matter follows naturally if they have the confidence and can just think for themselves not just spit back facts and what others want to hear. I would travel and relocate for a job.

Yes, I do love teaching and yes, I do believe that all children can learn and be successful. I believe that most children are more intelligent than generally thought, but some may need help in showing "how smart they are." I challenge students to perform at high levels and used multisensory techniques to give them the opportunity to learn necessary skills for achieving. I believe in using both disc ... read more

I have experienced various types of teaching styles while in school. I have learned a long the way every student is different and learns in a different way. In high school and all even through college math had always been my hardest subject. My second year in college I had a math professor that had a different approach to teaching math and for the first time in my life I finally understood math! Findi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching students of all ages and academic experiences, whether it is the high school student who doesn't want to attend school anymore or the most avid learner in the university setting. I truly believe that every person is capable of learning if they are presented the material in a way which can motivate them to internalize the value of an education. I do not think that assuming a superior role in the situation of teaching or tutoring is helpful, and I strive to instill confidence in every student whom I encounter.
Attending UNC Asheville helped me to realize the irreplaceable value of a passionate, knowledgeable, and empowering teacher. After I received my minor in Mathematics, I applied to become a math tutor for a high school student. I have tutored this student for a year and a half now in Math, writing, and Spanish. I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lost and abandoned and become disillusioned with the whole education system. My hope is to convince some of these children that they can make their educations work for them and maybe even become the child in class that begins to want to help others learn and grow.
As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robot ... read more
