Ph.D., Religion, Emory University (2013) M.A., Theology, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2005) B.A., History, Taylor University (2002) My career as a tutor began when I was looking for a way to support myself during my graduate studies in the Boston area. After signing on with a local company, I discovered my passion for finding better ways to help students overcome difficulties and achieve their goals. I enjoyed the challenges of adapting content to the individual needs of each student, of pioneering new ways of communicating ideas, and of working closely with parents to ensure that my efforts were effective. Sensing the need for more structure, I later moved to Kaplan. In more recent years, I have tutored independently. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the work is sharing in the success of my clients. Students of mine have increased their cumulative SAT scores by as ma ... read more

My tutoring style is the same as my teaching style which I learned from teaching the eighth graders at Friends School of Atlanta. The young students were very honest about what they wanted. A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and helping people understand subjects, especially math. Rather than focus on formulas and rote knowledge, I strive to help the student actually understand the rationale behind the formulas so that they can relate the knowledge to the real world. My teaching style is one of facilitation. I emphasize student-centered learning where I provide learning situations and activities that are designed to help the student process and apply the knowledge. Having students think for themselves is the best way to reinforce and integrate a subject into the student's knowledge base.
I have a stellar academic record, having received a BS Degree from the University of Pittsburgh where I graduated summa cum laude. I completed 3 semesters of calculus. I have always excelled in all areas of mathematics. I have taught math courses, SAT and GRE preparation courses, and bridge courses for ... read more

I find an interactive, Socratic teaching style in which I encourage the student to discover the answers on their own to understand why something works the way it does is a very effective approach for me rather than just lecturing, particularly for younger learners. I find it equally important for students to understand the why of what they are learning as well as the how and the what. I believe that students' multiple intelligences should be harnessed and that if students don't understand information presented initially, it is up to the teacher to find different ways of presenting the information so that the student can make it his or her own.
I have over 11 years of experience providing in home tutoring to individual high school, elementary school, and middle school students as well as adults for test preparation as well as for academic subject preparation. I have also had 6 ye ... read more

My strongest suit in my teaching style is probably the many ways that I would approach teaching a certain principle. If the student does not understand one way to approach a problem, I try to best to help them understand and learn another way. I feel like since everyone learns differently, a tutor should approach a problem from as many angles as possible. My teaching style is also very patient. I suppose the saying "give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish, feed him for a lifetime" would apply to my style. I try to make sure the student understands the principles behind the type of problem and not just how to do the one problem. That way, if they see another problem like the one they just learned, they can apply what the learned and do the second problem.
As a college senior, I've come to value greatly my education. Prior to enrolling at the University ... read more

I earned a BS in Computer Science from Berry College with a minor in Animal Science and one class short of a second minor in English. During my senior year I worked as a teaching assistant, helping the freshman programming class complete their assignments as well as grading their work and running study sessions. I just finished a master's in computer science at Rice University (degree to be awarded December 2010) and during my time at Rice I was a TA both for their freshman class as well as for the advanced Operating Systems class. Before I graduated I spent summers teaching horseback riding to children. Currently, I am independently tutoring a sixth grader in math twice a week.

I believe in following the Socratic method in my teaching, and encourage students to ask questions and take command of their own learning. Frequently I will have the students take turns presenting problems or answers to questions that they have asked me themselves in class before. I've found that occasionally the best way for a student to learn is to have them research the answers to their questions on their own, and present their findings to the class as a whole. It is through teaching each other that students learn best.
I graduated high school in 2001 and spent three years abroad in Japan, teaching English as a second language. Afterwards I completed my undergraduate education with a BA in economics and math. While attending college I worked my way through school tutoring both math and economics classes. Upon graduation, I started my post graduate career at the University ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate student in Biomechanics with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering I have gained an extensive knowledge of mathematics and the physical sciences, which I have been able to combine with my laboratory research experience and personal endeavors to develop a complete understanding of a well-rounded education. In conjunction with this education I have been a laboratory instructor for three years, which has allowed me to develop and implement course curriculum, including lectures, assignments, and final projects, while cultivating a great understanding of the teacher- student relationship. Allotting me the requisite skills to change students live, my experience in higher education has truly shown me how important it is to aid someone in their quest for a higher education.

I enjoy working with children and to see them successful is the most important goal in my tutoring career. I believe all children can succeed when available resources and optimal guidance are given to them. I myself is a successful Ivy League alumni from Columbia University Medical Center and I firmly believe my methods will yield superior results.
