Florida Certified Educator for Elementary to High School

I have two decades of experience in education. My first 10 years were spent in adult education training adults to work in various organizations in the business world. My last 10 years have been spent in public education classrooms working as a teacher for elementary, middle, and high school students. I have taught core content courses at each level. Therefore, I understand how each grade level builds upon the teaching and learning of the previous grade level.
I have a collaborative style of teaching. My ultimate goal is to get students to think, regardless of their age. With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. Getting the RIGHT answer isn't the goal -- understanding and developi ... read more

I made sure the basics are solid first. I feel that anatomy and clear understanding of the body and how it works is pivotal to success in dance. I am all about the details.
I have taught private lessons for a year, while also teaching ballet, modern, and jazz in studios. I also led dance class at a charter school for a year twice a week. During my private lessons I got to work one on one with individuals and truly see dramatic improvement. I strive to see my students grow and cultivate their own creativity in movement.

I really enjoy teaching and tutoring because not only am I helping others, I am learning as well. Teaching and tutoring are about giving: giving your time, your knowledge, and the things that you know will help your students. Every student learns at his/her own pace. My teaching style is adaptive to the particular student and subject matter. I like to encourage students to learn for themselves. An example would be to explain a theory and then have the student(s) demonstrate their understanding of that theory with a concrete example, so that they are participating in the process. I like the idea of learning by participation.
Both my undergraduate and graduate collegiate experiences have given me ample knowledge and skills to draw from with regard to teaching and tutoring. The experience of doing it, however, gave me much more. While I was in graduate school at the Universit ... read more

After getting my bachelor's degree in liberal studies, with a focus in Communications and Marketing, I found myself wanting more. I became certified in Elementary Education K-6 and began teaching first grade. In addition, I have a high school aged brother that is homeschooled. He at times needs help with his studies and I tutor him in Math, Science and English at home.
My teaching style is energetic and over the top. I like to think back to when I was in school and the subjects that stuck out to me, and why. It was because I was having fun learning, and that is how I try to approach each of my lessons. I relate them to real world situations if possible and try to put a personal spin on my lessons. What would make this lesson relative to the person who is trying to learn it? Children are so wonderful to be around and the smile they put on my face when they have grasped a new concept ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The Socratic method of teaching has been instilled in me as the most engaging and successful approach to learning. Through a series of deliberate, well-directed, leading questions from a tutor, the student arrives at the "answer" through his or her own reasoning process, as opposed to getting the answer through a tutor spitting out information. This approach builds confidence in the student, rather than dependence on the tutor, as the student receives a model of the learning process that they will ultimately be able to implement themselves. I believe that this approach, utilized by a tutor such as myself who is patient and encouraging, will never fail.
While serving the education department at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, I gave hour long tours to student groups ranging from elementary age to college level in which I led discussions on several works of art. As a historian, I have ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Currently I work at an alternative school for students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems teaching Math and Art. Although there is no art program, I voluntarily head up art contests and help students paint murals on the campus. My degrees are in Computer Information Systems, French, and Spanish. After being a Computer Programmer for five years, I decided to become more involved with education. I've taught Math at City College, ESOL at Valencia Community College, and all subjects in elementary schools. I've voluntarily tutored disadvantaged children at a local church and helped my sisters with their homework for years. Overall, I'm a jack-of-all-trades and enjoy discovering the many unique ways students think and learn.
My teaching style is clay. It molds itself to fit individual needs. For example, some students need visual aids and some need verbal. Sometimes even ... read more

My experience in Title I schools has been very exciting and rewarding. I have been able to use my degree in English as a resource for reading and writing and saw great results as my students' skills and interest levels soared as each year progressed. My unique approach to reading which is to stimulate interest in subject areas in advance of presenting materials seems to work wonders for children with limited life experience. I have had some very good in service training in the area of math as well. My last principal hired a math coach for teachers that brought our ability to teach math to multiple levels, up to a very high standard. I feel very confident that I could make a great difference in the education of children who may be in high risk situations.

A Little Bit About Me...

In addition to my already expansive coursework in philosophy, I took courses in computer science, chemistry and English literature. This breadth of exposure has given me a unique base of knowledge on which to draw for teaching. I have tutored many subjects throughout the last seven years, including most college-level math, sciences and arts. During the past year, I have held both a software training position at the University of South Florida, and an instructor position for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, which have together led to unprecedented confidence in the classroom.
The key to enjoyment and success in any subject lies in the student realizing how the material relates to their life. This can be revealed to them in various ways, usually through demonstration of practical applications or hypothetical extrapolation of situational relevance. I believe that when teachers raise their expectations of students, the students rise to that level of expectation. All students have the capacity to excel in any subject although their style of learning may differ from other students. When educators take care to find out about a student, including what interests and motivates him, the student is more likely to have successes in class if the educator use the information to hers and the student's advantage. Once a student begin to have successes, they will definitely look forward to performing well and building on that success. As a teacher, I believed that every child, regardless of background, deserved the very best education and should be constantly reminded of the unlimited possibilities that exist so they do not settle for less.

A Little Bit About Me...

During the past sixteen years, I have not only strived for academic excellence, but have also enjoyed a passion for learning and educating. My recent graduation from the University of Notre Dame illustrates this passion. Although I earned my BA in Political Science, I supplemented my liberal arts education with business, math, and sciences courses. Therefore, I have developed both my writing, research, and critical thinking skills, and my ability to solve complex technical and analytical problems. As a result of this exposure to a variety of fields of study, I am able to understand, appreciate, apply, and explain a diverse set of skills and concepts.
