A Little Bit About Me...

Hello, my name is Lauren and I absolutely love tutoring! I have tutored since I was in high school (about 5 years of experience total)and more recently have worked as a Peer Tutor at Westminster College, as well as teaching private voice and piano lessons. As a biology major, I'm most experienced in science and math related areas, particularly general biology, general chemistry, statistics, algebra, and geometry. I am also very qualified to tutor ACT and SAT test prep, as I scored extremely high in all areas of the two tests, earning a 34 on the ACT and a 2190 on the SAT. I'm also qualified to tutor in several humanities areas, especially writing-a skill strongly emphasized by Westminster's intensive and selective Honors Program. I have also taken AP tests in English Literature (5), Human Geography (5), European History (4), and American History (4) and IB tests in English (6) an ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have yet to complete my senior year of studies at the University but I will be done by Spring 2011. I am working towards my first Bachelors Degree, BS in Physics and will continue with school after until I get my MS in Chemical Engineering. Physics and Chemistry have always come easy to me and I know that because of this I can help others understand these sometimes tougher subjects easier.
My teaching style might be a bit unorthodox but it is something I have acquired from past teachers and tutors. I have not helped or tutored in a while but I believe I have an easy and simple approach to it. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word. You have to find a way to relate it to real life and what you see everyday. A spinning disk becomes a truck tire, a s ... read more

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology with Physics and Chemistry backing. I recently graduated from a doctoral degree program in Environmental Management with focus on hydro-chemical modeling of water resources using multivariate statistical methods and mass balance methods. I have taught Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Algebra and Geometry for three years at the Passaic County Community College's college and Upward Bound Programs in New Jersey. I have also tutored students of the same program during the three year period. I am therefore confident that I would be able to teach the above mentioned courses without any difficulty.
I begin each lesson with the understanding that different students have different approaches to understanding the same concept. I am therefore always prepared to use different approaches to help students who need extra h ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In college I had the opportunity to work as a peer tutor and also as a tutor for high school students through the Upward Bound program. I did this via face to face as well as through phone tutoring. Upon graduating I was lucky enough to get a full time job with the Upward Bound program and continued to tutor as well as train tutors. Seven years ago I had the opportunity to enter the teaching arena and have enjoyed a wide array of subjects.
A teacher should treat their students as consumers. As consumers those students need to have their needs and expectations met. Every student learns differently and expects the instructor to be the expert in the subject matter. Being that expert the instructor should have and show a passion for the subject that makes the students want to know more. Each student is a valuable member of the class and as such has valuable experience and opinions that ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Since junior high, I have tutored those who needed it. In high school, I helped put together a tutoring program at a nearby junior high and elementary school, in addition to my continued tutoring of classmates and friends. I graduated from the University of Utah in math education, following a 6-month student teaching experience at a junior high. From 2008 till now, I've been a substitute teacher, teaching in junior highs and high schools. And I've kept up my tutoring for my friends in college. In other words, my life is math teaching.
I focus on the learner. Students learn in a variety of ways, and I respect their personal learning method. Generally, I ask questions to guide students through processes. Also, I treat learning as an active process, so I do what I can to keep them engaged in the study. I like using concrete examples from real life, and making it interesting ... read more

My teaching style utilizes multiple methods. One of my talents is the ability to recognize when the light goes on and people understand what is being taught. I make a habit of testing those I work with to ensure comprehension not only in theory but in practice as well. Patience, understanding, and communication are paramount in helping others learn. My abilities to relate the subjects taught and provide a comfortable environment where they can ask questions will enable the most efficient learning possible. Not only do you get my time as a tutor I continue to consider different teaching ideas throughout the day as I continue to problem solve and create ideas to assist the student learn better.

As the Academic Dean at a junior college, I had to teach Department Chairs and Instructors a method of learning that we called Inspire. I was chosen to facilitate because this system mirrored my own teaching style already. I believe that students learn the best when all their sense organs are engaged. I encourage discovery by making abstract concepts tactile and kinesthetic. Some students are more auditory while other students are more visual learners, thus I try to engage every appropriate medium to capture their attention and imagination. Engaging a student's cognition helps a student answer their own "why" questions.
Since the summer of 2001, I have been teaching college courses in the junior college level. I have taught Psychology, American History, Geography, Strategies for Success, Critical Thinking, Economics, Let's Talk Business, and Basic Mathematics. I was working mostly ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is actually very fluid and relates specifically to the people that I am currently teaching. Every person learns differently, as such, a wide range of teaching styles is required to teach a wide range of people. As a tutor, I was able to develop my teaching skills in a wide range of areas (including: analogies, step/progression, fundamental-based teaching and increasingly narrowed focus) that have helped me teach many different people with many different backgrounds not only math, but also physics and biology as well.
While a Biological Sciences major at Brigham Young University Idaho I took several different math courses that were above and beyond those required for my degree. I excelled at each of the classes that I took, and was actually recruited by my calculus teacher to become a statistics and calculus tutor at the university math lab. I worked for 4 consecut ... read more

When I was attending Weber State University I tutored students in mathematics, and later on I actually had the opportunity to teach a math class there. I've had the chance to train employees at work too. The most fun I've had with teaching, though, is when a friend or relative is referred to me for help, and I can help that person understand the material one-on-one.
I can explain difficult things and make them easy to understand. When I taught a math class at Weber State, my students would ask me why other teachers wouldn't just 'say' things so simply like I did. It felt very good to be so complimented, and it was exciting to see them understand those math concepts for the first time. I'm also told I have a lot of patience. I appreciate that as well, and believe that is important.

I have earned a Bachelors of Science degree in physics, and minored in mathematics at Weber State University. During my years in college I was a physics lab assistant for a year. Some of the duties as a lab assistant were to answer students’ questions and help them understand the fundamental principles of physics. I also worked at a Skills Enhancement Center on campus tutoring mathematics. I tutored students taking classes from basic algebra to calculus. I am working for a company, and have been for over ten years, that utilize my math skills and physics knowledge.
One of the most fulfilling feelings in life is to see a person’s face light up because of a concept finally understood, and that is what I look forward to seeing in those whom I tutor. Being a recent graduate of the University of Portland with a degree in International Business and Finance, I have already had the opportunity to use my skills by working in Financial Services in London. During my four years of study at the University of Portland, I spent two semesters in Salzburg, Austria and one semester in Perth, Australia. I have received top-tier education and plan to use this to my full potential, especially through teaching others. I have been very involved throughout my college years with tutoring (mainly Math and English) and continued tutoring Elementary level students part time while I was working in London.
My teaching style incorporates an initial understanding of the student. I believe that it is crucial to understand the needs, wants, and habits of the individual to get the most out of each session. I am able to create an atmosphere which makes the wo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have a great deal of experience along with a sound background in mathematics.
When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.

I am an extremely patient and positive teacher. I believe that the fundamental gift a teacher can give to their students is the gift of confidence. In my experience the primary obstacle to a student's progress is usually their own disbelief that they can do it. As a teacher, if you can persuade the student to overcome this doubt, the rest of the job simply requires patience and resilience.
I am an aspiring condensed matter physicist with extensive knowledge of chemistry and mathematics. I have experience in the industry working as a researcher and engineer which gave me a deep insight into applying the physical principles I learned in school. I have taught English as a second language in a formal setting and tutored numerous friends and colleagues in matters ranging from introductory physics to technical writing.
