A Little Bit About Me...

I am a former UConn graduate (1984) with a BS in Marketing. Many of my electives were in mathematics, enabling me to work as a student tutor on campus. I have also completed coursework in anatomy and physiology. In addition to tutoring college level students I have worked with elementary and middle school children in church youth groups, assisting with bible verse memorization and reading skills,as well as staging music productions. My experience also includes homeschooling my own children and assisting in classrooms.
My teaching style is relaxed, but focused. I believe all children can be natural learners, especially when they find something that interests them. Patience is the key with children. Every child has their own pace and learning style. Some are very visual learners while others need to be able to be more hands-on. It is very rewarding helping someone succeed.

Teaching Style- That is an interesting question- since there are so many schools with so many different teaching methods I would like to see how the student was shown the particular method for "attack". It would also be helpful to compare that to the textbook directions; from there I will be able to develop a plan based on the topic and the individual student. I have had to recreate lessons for my son for years in order to develop a style that he understands. The student may have an idea for creatively learning this topic- I am always open to suggestions.
It wasn't until I completed my B.S. degree and had a child of my own to fully understand the importance of an education. My son was diagnosed with Autism, this diagnosis woke in me a new desire to learn. I went on to complete my Masters Degree while working on my son's social, language and educational development. I became ... read more

It is important to help the student gain confidence with the subject and to build his self-esteem. As the student increases his knowledge and problem-solving abilities his confidence and curiosity will also increase. Learning will become a lifetime pursuit.

This connection is crucial because I have a what I believe is a traditional teaching style which emphasizes organization and analytical skills through constant and sustained practice. By connecting with my students and treating them as individuals, I foster the sense of responsibility required to follow through and become a successful student in any subject.

I personally can say that I have learned the most & can recall the most from those teachers that I consider my favorites. I believe it is because they knew how to inspire and motivate me to achieve what I thought I couldn’t or didn’t want to do. Those early experience is the inspiration behind the way I teach/tutor and write. I once heard it stated that ‘no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care’. I truly believe that you have to have a genuine interest in the individuals you are trying to inspire in order to make learning a possibility, especially in young children & adolescents. I also believe that in order to make a difference & be a positive influence; you really have to enjoy & have a passion for what you do

I specialize in working with students who have behavioral and/or learning issues. Much of my experience has been teaching academically at-risk teens and pre-teens as well as emotionally troubled teens. I believe that part of a tutor's role is to build a student's confidence in the subject area and to make the material relevant so a student will be motivated to learn the subject. I will try to incorporate various mediums (e.g. audio and visual) to approach the subject creatively if a student is really struggling.
My undergraduate major was Writing-in-Education so I began working in New York city schools during college as a playwright's assistant and while studying tracking in elementary schools. A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate, I worked as a College Algebra tutor for two years. This required 3 to 6 office hours a week were students would come to on need basis or if their grade fell below a 70. I would also attend algebra classes every week to help the professor and the students. I became a favorite to many students and professors and was kept busy because of all the recommendations I received. During my last semester as a tutor, the director had a car accident and was out for many weeks. I took the responsibility to coordinate and lead exam review sessions for 20+ students by myself. Tutoring algebra was a great experience for me and I enjoy it very much.
I enjoy teaching all types and ages. I understand that not everyone learns the same, and I had many regulars that proved this to be true. I try to make the session as fun and light hearted as possible. I find when the stude ... read more

I am currently working part time as a ski instructor with children. This has taught me to be patient with the development of my students. It is incredibly important to maintain an atmosphere where learning is fun. I am certified by Oxford seminars to teach english as a second language. During the classes we studied general techniques for teaching english, that can be used for native speakers as well. I am a firm believer that there are all different types of learners, and thus teaching styles should adapt to the individuals needs.
I specialized in poetry studying under one of the top T.S. Eliot scholars. As a literature major we studied a wide range of topics from early english to post colonial literature.
