I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. Once we discover what is needed, I encourage the student to look for strategic, organized ways of fulfilling that need. Some students need help reading a text closely to uncover meaning so they can develop an essay with solid evidence, for example.
