Reasonable Rates for a Passionate, Experienced Teacher

I have been teaching Information Technology at both the elementary and middle-school level in private schools in Northern Virginia for most of the last ten years. In addition, I have tutored at high-school level in Chemistry and History. With both a Bachelor's Degree in History, and a Maser's degree in Network Information Systems, I am qualified to tutor in both the Social as well as the Computer Sciences, with an additional capability in Chemistry and Math at the advanced high school level.
I think that the most important aspect of tutoring is finding out why the student needs a tutor, and to get to the bottom of that, it is important to listen to the student and figure out what the barrier to learning has been. I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towards a total understanding of one concept before moving on to the next. Secondly, laughter and enjoyment need to be part of the learning process. I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.
I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I graduated from Liberty University in May 2009 with a BS in Accounting. I am currently and have been a substitute teacher in Bedford County for the 2009-2010 school year. I have substituted for grades 6-12. I have been a football coach at Liberty High School for 3 years and I have been a track & field coach at Liberty High School for 5 years.
